What actually works with Xbox Series X|S over HDMI
Xbox Series X|S has no USB-C port at all — its only external ports are USB-A, HDMI, and Ethernet. Every USB-C dock, hub, or adapter in this database is automatically off the table, not because of a compatibility failure but because there's no port to plug one into. Video leaves the console exclusively through HDMI.
What does apply: capture cards, which take the console's HDMI output as their input, monitors connected directly over HDMI, and HDMI-to-HDMI cables carrying that same signal. 57 products confirmed here: 29 capture cards, 26 monitors, 2 HDMI cables.
VRR encoded in YCbCr 4:2:0 breaks some capture decoders on Xbox specifically. The ezcap GameDock Extreme loses the image entirely until "Allow YCC 4:2:2" is manually enabled in the console's video settings — an Xbox-side fix that doesn't come up on PS5 with the same hardware.
A recurring pattern across unrelated monitor brands: Xbox Series consoles default to a 60fps ceiling over HDMI 2.0 until you manually override the video fidelity settings. It shows up with the ASUS TUF Gaming VG259QM and the AOC 24G2Z alike, which points to console-side behavior rather than either monitor being at fault.
Bandwidth, not the console, is usually the ceiling on 4K120 setups. The ROG Swift PG32UQX can do 4K120 with Xbox Series X, but only by dropping to 4:2:0 chroma and typically losing HDR — an 18Gbps limit on the monitor's own HDMI 2.0 ports, not something the console is holding back.
