USB-C and Thunderbolt gear confirmed for Steam Deck

Steam Deck has a single USB-C port carrying video (DisplayPort Alt Mode), data, and Power Delivery at the same time. That's why so many confirmations below come with a power-budget caveat, not just a yes/no on video output — the port is doing three jobs at once, and something usually gives first.

Cable quality matters more than spec sheets suggest. The Elgato 4K X drops HDR support entirely if the USB-C cable isn't genuinely rated for 10Gbps — it still "works" at a lower rating, just without the feature you bought it for.

"USB-C monitor" doesn't automatically mean it charges your Deck. Several monitors marketed with Power Delivery, like the ASUS ROG Strix XG17AHPE, have zero bidirectional passthrough — they power their own panel but forward nothing back to the handheld, which drains normally during play regardless of the connection.

Even a fully confirmed product can hide a real quirk: the Elgato HD60 X loses HDMI audio entirely on Steam Deck due to a documented EDID handshake bug. The fix isn't on the Deck's side — you have to run Elgato's 4K Capture Utility on a separate Windows PC first to force the right EDID profile.
